How did you deal with the stress of applying to college?

I started early. The Common App opens in August, so I began brainstorming essays as soon as possible. This helped me balance applications with school because I finished most of them during the summer.

Did you use a private admissions counselor, and what advice did you receive?

I didn't use any counselor, but I found amazing advice on the r/ApplyingToCollege subreddit which I used to help prepare for my applications.

What summer activities would you recommend for high school and college students?

I recommend exploring your passions and trying new activities. Generally, programs that pay you to attend are better than free programs, which are better than programs that cost money. Great research programs include RSI, Jackson Lab SSP, SIMR, and Simons.

How did you narrow down your essay topics?

I chose to write about activities that I invested the most time in or those that made the most significant impact on my life.

What is your advice for finding scholarships or dealing with loans?

Apply for a ton of merit scholarships! National ones like Coca-Cola or GE-Reagan have large awards, but your chances are often better with local scholarships found through your guidance counselor.

What is your advice for getting recommenders?

Choose teachers you have a good relationship with and some sort of contact outside of teaching, such as through clubs, so they can write about more than just your in-class performance.
